  1. I am 40, now I need to use a bifocal glass, but I don't like to use it as it shows on the age and looks ugly?

Ans: Every individual after 40 yrs needs reading correction. Those who are hyperopes may need reading glasses early and myopes may need a little later. To avoid people knowing your age you could use what is known as progressive lens. It has the following advantages:

    • The dividing line is not there.
    • You can see clearly at all distances.
    • It gives you a young look and enhances confidence.

However it is likely that you need almost 2-10 days of adaption time to the lens.

  2. What are computer glasses?

Ans: Computer glasses are glasses whose lenses are coated with a multilayered anti-reflection coating and have a UV- blocking property. These lenses are used by spectacle wearers. Even with negligible refractive errors, computer users are required to use these lenses while they are at work.

  3. Are plastic lenses better or glasses?

Ans: Optical performance of plastic lens is equal to that of glass. Globally, plastic is the lens, of choice, as it has the full added advantages over glass:

    • Inquiry to the eye is not there because of breakage so it is preferred in children
    • It is lighter in weight, so the dark mark which spectacle wearers develop on the nose is avoided.
    • All plastic lenses have an in built UV protection.
    • New generation plastic lenses (polycarbonate) are much more tougher and lighter.

Only drawback on plastic lenses are they should be handled with care to prevent scratches although all plastic lenses are coated with scratch resistant coating.

  4. I have problem driving at night what do I do?

Ans: If you are a spectacle wearer you should use lenses that are coated with antireflection coat. In case you are not using spectacles, you need to get your eyes checked for refractive errors if any. In case there is no correction required then the only choice is to adhere to disciplined driving.

  5. My power is very high, my glasses are very thick, what would you like to suggest?

Ans: If your power is high you have the following options:

    • Use high index lenses
    • Aspheric lenses
    • Always use a small frame

All Hi index lenses that are worn have to be necessarily coated with an antireflection coat. This coat shall give increased transmission of light and cuts of diffraction, thus giving more clarity in vision and also cosmetically appears better.

  6. I am a swimmer and have a power of (-5.00 D) can you provide something that will help me while swimming?

Ans: You can use soft contact lenses combined C swimming goggles.

  7. Can I sleep with my contact lenses?

Ans: Sleeping with contact lenses is not advisable. Once you close your eyes with contact lenses on, the cornea is deprived of your eyes of oxygen which results in corneal odema and gives irritation, blurring etc. However, if you need to use your lenses for prolonged hours about 14-16 hrs and you are likely to sleep with lenses on then special type of soft lenses are available which are called extended wear lenses. These lenses have a very high water content in them. So O2 requirement to the cornea is taken care of even when the eyes are closed.

  8. I am wearing high cylindrical power, can I wear lenses?

Ans: Yes, cylindrical power is no longer a problem for contact lens wear. You can use the special soft lenses which ensures optimum vision correction or you can use rigid gas permeable lenses.

  9. I am 14 yrs old, my power is changing frequently will lenses help to reduce my power?

Ans: No, contact lenses are just options to glasses. They will in no way help you to reduce your power. However contact lens gives you a better quality of vision than glasses, and also a wider field of vision. It raises your level of confidence as it improves your looks.
